IBAN checker

Check an IBAN’s format, length, and check digits before you send, with bank details where available.

Checked in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Altitude.

  • Private by design

Checked in your browser, never sent or stored.

  • Country-specific checks

Check the length, format, and check digits for the IBAN’s country.

  • Bank details where available

See bank codes and BICs from the directories supported by this tool.

What an IBAN contains

An International Bank Account Number starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by the country’s domestic account details, known as the BBAN. These may include a bank code, branch code, and account number. IBAN length is fixed for each country, from 15 characters in Norway to a maximum of 34.

Checking payment details as a business

An IBAN check can help catch typing errors, but it cannot confirm who owns the account or whether an invoice is genuine. If a supplier changes their bank details, confirm the change using a phone number you already trust before sending a payment.

For AI agents

Use the JSON API to validate an IBAN from an agent workflow. Unlike the checker on this page, an API request sends the IBAN to Altitude for validation. See the tools for AI agents page for setup instructions.

It checks the IBAN’s length, country-specific format, and check digits. Where supported directory data is available, it also shows bank details. These checks help identify formatting errors; they do not verify the account holder.

No. A valid result means the IBAN passes the checker’s structural checks. It does not confirm that the account exists, is active, or belongs to the person or business you intend to pay.

The checker on this website validates your IBAN in your browser without sending it to Altitude. If you use the JSON API instead, your request sends the IBAN to Altitude for validation.

This tool currently looks up BICs for Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain. For other countries, ask the recipient for their bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.
